An 18-year-old man has been extradited from Dubai and formally charged with the murder of a Thai woman who was fatally stabbed at her £4 million Hyde Park residence two years ago. Enzo Bettamio, who has no fixed address, was flown back to the United Kingdom on Friday following a coordinated effort between the Metropolitan Police and the Crown Prosecution Service to secure his return.
Details of the Case
The charge relates to the killing of 27-year-old Kamonnan Thiamphanit, also known as Angela. She was discovered with multiple stab wounds at her home in Stanhope Place on Monday, April 8, 2024. Police were called to the scene at approximately 8:30 am, where she was pronounced dead. A major investigation was launched, involving extensive enquiries over the following months.
Bettamio was formally charged with murder on Saturday, a day after arriving in the UK. He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Saturday, April 25. Ms Thiamphanit's family have been informed of the development and continue to receive support from specialist officers.
Investigator's Statement
Detective Chief Inspector Alison Foxwell, who is leading the investigation, expressed her gratitude: 'I would also like to express my sincere thanks to Angela's family and friends for their patience and unwavering support to the investigation, throughout what has been an incredibly difficult and distressing time for them.'
Background of the Victim
In May 2024, Angela's mother, Fiona Fu, revealed that her daughter had met her alleged killer through Airbnb. Speaking exclusively to the Daily Mail, Ms Fu, 63, said: 'Angela was my only child, and we were very close. Her killing has crushed me, I'm totally devastated. She was very ambitious, all she ever wanted to do was take care of me and eventually own her own hotel.'
Ms Fu explained that Angela invested significant time and money into the property, hoping to generate a strong financial return by renting it out on Airbnb and becoming a successful businesswoman. Tragically, she was unable to fulfil her dream.
Angela was a dual Thai and Chinese-Hong Kong national who had lived in London for the past ten years. She did not own the Hyde Park property but was renting it on a two-year lease and had been living there since January. Born in the Thai city of Ratchaburi, she moved to Hong Kong at age one with her mother after her parents' marriage ended. She attended boarding school in Wales and later studied at the University of the Arts London.
She was working at an IT company before deciding to establish a small property management business, taking over the Hyde Park home. After redecorating, she advertised it on Airbnb, charging £600 per night for a room due to its prime location near famous tourist attractions.
Angela shared the home with her boyfriend, Chris Zeng, 27, and they stayed in the basement to ensure privacy for renters. He disclosed that after leaving for Singapore just days before Angela's body was discovered, she called him to say that a man had contacted her via Airbnb, interested in renting the entire home for a month and willing to pay £30,000.
