Avon and Somerset Police have launched a thorough investigation and issued an urgent appeal for witnesses after a teenage girl reported being raped while walking through a quiet rural village in North Somerset.
Incident Details and Police Response
The alleged attack occurred in the Rooksbridge area at approximately 1am on March 16. The victim managed to flee the scene and was subsequently assisted by a member of the public, whom officers have since interviewed. A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape but has been released on conditional bail as enquiries continue.
Appeal for Witnesses and Dashcam Footage
Police are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have seen a woman walking alone in rural parts of North Somerset earlier this month. Officers are also seeking drivers who were in the Rooksbridge, Loxton, Sevier Road, and Axbridge areas between 6am and 7.45am on the day of the incident, urging them to come forward with any dashcam footage or information that could aid the investigation.
Neighbourhoods’ Inspector Charmaine Dyne emphasised the seriousness of the case, stating, "A thorough investigation is underway, and we remain in contact with the victim who has been offered access to specialist support services." She added, "We would also particularly like to speak to a woman, who was described as wearing a lanyard and being in the company of a small child, who was approached by another woman who asked for directions to Bridgwater."
Commitment to Supporting Victims
Inspector Dyne reinforced the police's stance on violence against women and girls, asserting, "We want to remind people that any violence towards women and girls will not be tolerated, and any victim of a sexual offence will be heard, believed, and supported." This appeal underscores the ongoing efforts to ensure justice and provide comprehensive support to those affected by such crimes.
The investigation remains active, with authorities urging anyone with relevant information to contact Avon and Somerset Police immediately to assist in bringing the perpetrator to justice and safeguarding the community.
