Four Men Arrested in London for Alleged Iranian Espionage Against Jewish Community
Counter-terrorism police in London have made a series of arrests as part of a long-running investigation into suspected espionage activities linked to Iranian intelligence. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that four individuals were detained on suspicion of spying for Iran, specifically targeting locations and people associated with the Jewish community in the London area.
Details of the Arrests and Investigation
The arrests occurred in the early hours of Friday morning during a pre-planned operation. The suspects include one Iranian national and three dual British-Iranian citizens. They were apprehended at addresses in Barnet and Watford, with charges related to assisting a foreign intelligence service, namely Iran. Police have stated that the investigation focuses on alleged surveillance operations directed at Jewish-linked sites and individuals in London.
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, emphasized the ongoing nature of the probe. "Today's arrests are part of a long-running investigation and part of our ongoing work to disrupt malign activity where we suspect it," she said. Flanagan also addressed concerns within the Jewish community, urging vigilance and prompt reporting of any suspicious activities to authorities.
Additional Arrests and Police Operations
In a related development, six other men were arrested in Harrow on suspicion of assisting an offender. Among them, one individual was further charged with assaulting a police officer. All ten detainees have been taken into custody as searches continue at multiple locations, including addresses in Barnet and Wembley. The ages of those arrested range from 20 to 55, highlighting the broad scope of the investigation.
The police have reassured the public that these actions are part of a coordinated effort to safeguard national security and protect vulnerable communities from foreign threats. The case underscores the persistent challenges faced by law enforcement in countering espionage and terrorism in urban areas.
