All Merseyrail services faced severe disruption on Tuesday after an electrical fire at a Network Rail substation forced the closure of Liverpool Central, James Street, and Moorfields stations. The fire caused a loss of power across the network's underground loop, halting trains on the Northern and Wirral lines through the city centre.
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service responded to reports of smoke at Liverpool Central Station on Ranelagh Street at 12:14pm. Two fire engines attended, and a full evacuation of the station and trains was carried out as a precaution. Power supplies were isolated to allow firefighters to investigate safely.
A fire service spokesperson confirmed that there was no power to the loop, which could cause continued disruption. Passengers were advised to check Merseyrail's website and social media for updates. One passenger praised staff at Liverpool Central for their calm response and assistance during the evacuation.
Among those affected were Janet Harding, 62, and Derek Harding, 72, who were trying to return to Bromborough. Janet said: “We’ll have to get the bus now. It’s a longer walk home as the station is right by our house. It’s a shame, but it’s a fire. What can you do?”
Partial services operated on some routes, with trains running only between Southport and Sandhills, and between Headbolt Lane and Sandhills. Ticket acceptance was arranged on Stagecoach and Arriva buses, as well as Mersey Ferries, to help passengers complete their journeys.
The incident was resolved around 4pm, and services began returning to normal. A Network Rail spokesperson apologised for the disruption and thanked the fire service for their quick response. Passengers were advised to check National Rail Enquiries or the Merseyrail website for the latest travel information.
