Los Angeles police officers fatally shot a family's pet dog named Jameson, a two-year-old doodle, after responding to a noise complaint that turned out to be a celebration of the New York Knicks' championship win. The incident occurred on Saturday night, just minutes after the conclusion of the NBA championship game five.
Details of the Incident
According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), officers were dispatched to an apartment in the Canoga Park neighborhood following a report of a screaming woman. Upon arrival, the woman opened the door, and a large barking dog, Jameson, exited the apartment. The dog then charged at an officer, leading to an officer-involved shooting.
Video footage of the aftermath, which went viral on TikTok, shows the woman lying on the ground with Jameson's lifeless body, sobbing and clutching the dog. Nearly a dozen officers stand nearby. A bystander can be heard shouting, "This is fucking pathetic when there's drug dealers, people stabbing each other outside. It's a fucking dog."
Family's Account
Jeremiah Garcia, who launched a GoFundMe campaign for Jameson's cremation, described the dog as "the sweetest boy in the world." The fundraiser quickly surpassed $125,000, far exceeding its initial target. Garcia wrote, "On June 13th, 2026, 10 minutes after celebrating the Knicks championship win, our dog was fatally shot right outside our home. Jameson was 2 years old, and he was taken from us too soon."
Community Outcry and Demands for Transparency
The Los Angeles National Action Network has demanded the release of body-camera footage from the shooting. Senior organizer Najee Ali stated, "The tragic killing of Jameson was unnecessary and unwarranted. We demand immediate accountability, which can only happen through the prompt release of the body-worn camera footage and the names of the officers responsible."
The incident has sparked widespread criticism, with many questioning the use of lethal force against a family pet. The LAPD has not yet released the names of the officers involved.
