Dramatic video footage has captured the moment a motorist took the law into his own hands by ramming his Land Rover into an alleged machete-wielding thief in broad daylight. The stunning incident occurred on Saturday at the Tulse Hill Sainsbury's car park in Brixton, witnessed by numerous passersby, including a young girl with her parents.
Chaotic Confrontation Unfolds
Onlookers can be heard gasping as the driver of the Land Rover goes bonnet-first into a stolen motorbike, causing its helmet-wearing rider to jump off in a panic. Terrifyingly, a long machete then comes into view as the suspected thief runs back to the car park to retrieve his backpack. He swiftly leaves the area before the car driver gets another chance to ram him, adding to the chaotic scene.
Aftermath and Police Response
Footage from the aftermath shows the black motorbike lying on its side in the car park, with its front light still glowing eerily. Shouting is audible before the Land Rover driver, who had briefly exited the vehicle, runs back and restarts the engine. At one point, the suspected thief appears to run towards the driver's door but is soon sent fleeing again upon realising he remains at risk of being struck.
The Metropolitan Police responded to reports of a man with a machete at around 6:15 pm on Saturday evening. A spokesman stated: 'Initial reports indicated that a driver had stopped to confront a man believed to be stealing a bike. When approached, the man allegedly threatened the driver with a machete. The driver then reportedly drove into the man as he attempted to leave the scene on a motorbike.'
Police arrived within three minutes, but both parties had already departed. Shortly afterwards, a 19-year-old man was detained and arrested nearby on suspicion of multiple offences, including common assault, grievous bodily harm, threats to kill, theft of a bike, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of an offensive weapon, driving while disqualified, and possession of drugs.
The driver of the Land Rover has contacted the police and is assisting with enquiries. Authorities are urging anyone with information to call 101, quoting reference CAD 5785/28Mar, to aid the ongoing investigation.
