Husband's Decade-Long Search for Wife Who Vanished After Morning Goodbye
Husband's 10-Year Search for Wife Who Vanished After Goodbye

A devoted wife and mother vanished without a trace a decade ago, leaving her family in a state of perpetual anguish and unanswered questions. Fatima Mohamed-Ali was last seen on CCTV footage walking away from her home in Newhaven, East Sussex, on February 12, 2016, just fifteen minutes after kissing her husband Mohamed goodbye as he left for work.

A Routine Morning That Turned Into a Nightmare

The day began like any other for the 52-year-old mother of three. She woke her husband, prepared his breakfast, and shared a farewell kiss as he departed at 7:30 AM. Mohamed recalled offering to pick up groceries on his way home, but Fatima suggested they go shopping together the following day instead. That ordinary domestic conversation would be their last.

When Mohamed returned home around 1:30 PM, he expected to find his wife cooking in the kitchen with her favorite George Michael or Boy George album playing in the background. Instead, he was met with an eerie silence that immediately signaled something was terribly wrong.

The Disturbing Discoveries

"I thought maybe she was upstairs doing some ironing so I gave her a couple of shouts but didn't get any answer," Mohamed recounted. "I then noticed the car keys on the lounge table which I thought was odd because Fatima would never leave the house without her car."

Panic set in as Mohamed made several alarming discoveries:

  • Fatima's mobile phone ringing on her bed when he called it
  • Her wedding and engagement rings left on the dressing table, which she never removed
  • No indication she had taken any personal belongings with her

A Decade of Searching and Speculation

Police conducted extensive searches of the local area, including beaches and cliffs, but found no trace of Fatima. The investigation revealed CCTV footage showing her walking briskly away from their home shortly after Mohamed's departure, but this visual evidence marked the last confirmed sighting.

In 2017, a former colleague reported a possible sighting near a bus stop in Brighton. Grainy CCTV footage appeared to show Fatima's back view, and Mohamed and his son were approximately 70 percent certain it was her. However, Mohamed believes police didn't pursue this lead with sufficient vigor.

"I don't like to criticise the police, but I feel they didn't make the effort to pursue the sighting," said Mohamed. "Why didn't they look at the CCTV from neighbouring shops? Why didn't they ask the person to identify themselves, even just to eliminate it?"

Family Refuses to Give Up Hope

Mohamed, now 66, describes his 38-year marriage to Fatima as "very happy." The couple met in Tanzania in the early 1980s, settled in Newhaven, built a home together, raised three children, and welcomed grandchildren whom Fatima adored.

Despite the passage of time, Mohamed refuses to believe his wife took her own life. "Being religious, Fatima was always strongly against self harm and things like that," he explained. "She would always stress that no matter your troubles in life, don't look at that path, God always has an answer for you."

He also noted that Fatima suffered from severe obsessive-compulsive disorder that made her fearful of getting dirty, making it unlikely she would have walked on beaches or through grassy areas.

Police Response and Ongoing Investigation

Detective Inspector Daniel Dugan of East Sussex's Missing Persons Team stated: "We absolutely understand the impact on people's families and loved ones when they are reported missing. From the moment Fatima Mohamed-Ali was reported missing in February, 2016, we have worked tirelessly to locate her and provide her family with the answers they deserve."

The investigation remains open and is regularly reviewed by senior officers, with the most recent review occurring in March 2025. Police continue to appeal for information about Fatima, describing her as Indian, 5'2", of slim build with shoulder-length black hair typically worn in a ponytail, and known to wear traditional Indian dress under a beige coat.

A Family Frozen in Time

Mohamed and his children have preserved Fatima's belongings exactly as she left them, maintaining her wardrobe, perfumes, jewellery, and handbags with their contents intact. "When the grandchildren come over, I show them her dresses and say: 'This was your granny's,'" Mohamed shared.

The family's lives remain suspended in uncertainty. "My nightmare began that day and I've been living it ever since," Mohamed confessed. "It has turned me and my children's lives upside down – we can't focus, we don't celebrate anything. I'm literally a recluse, I go to work and come home, because I think one day the bell will ring or there will be a knock at the door."

As the tenth anniversary of Fatima's disappearance passes, her family continues to hope for resolution. "There are so many thoughts going through my mind – did she go to meet somebody and something happened? Was it intentional? Did she harm herself?" Mohamed pondered. "We just need a clue, a clue of something."
