Almunthir Daqamah, 21, has appeared in court charged with attempted murder after a campus safety officer was shot with a crossbow at the University of Surrey in Guildford. The attack occurred on Thursday morning when the officer, Robert Tytler, asked the former student to leave a student village.
Tytler, in his 50s, remains in hospital in a stable condition. Prosecutor Lucy Lumsden told Guildford Magistrates' Court that the bolt “thankfully and miraculously missed all his organs and bowel”. Daqamah, a Saudi national of no fixed address, spoke only to confirm his details.
Police allegedly found a zombie-style knife, a lock knife, and a quantity of marijuana on the defendant. He has also been charged with possession of an offensive weapon, two counts of possession of a bladed article, and possession of class B drugs. Inquiries are ongoing into how long he has been in the UK.
Daqamah has been remanded in custody and will appear at Guildford Crown Court on 9 July. Chief Superintendent Jon Groenen urged the public not to speculate online and to contact police with any information.
