Peterborough Man Jailed for Assaulting Police Officers

Police bodycam footage has revealed a man verbally abusing and spitting at officers during an arrest in Peterborough city centre. Charlie Spurrier, 22, of no fixed address, was being detained for being drunk and disorderly when he lashed out at police.

The footage shows Spurrier shouting and assaulting officers, who were forced to restrain him in an ambulance after he repeatedly banged his head against the bars of a police van, causing him to lose consciousness. A policing union has noted that assaults on officers are on the rise.

At Cambridge Magistrates’ Court, Spurrier pleaded guilty to three counts of assaulting an emergency worker, racially aggravated assault, and a racially aggravated public order offence. He was sentenced to 33 weeks in prison, which includes the activation of a previously suspended 12-week sentence for assault causing actual bodily harm.
