Three additional men have been charged in connection with the violent unrest that erupted during a protest in Southampton following the murder of Henry Nowak. This brings the total number of individuals charged in relation to the anti-police demonstrations to 14.
Arrests and Charges
A 16-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder but has been released on bail pending further inquiries. Four other men, aged between 18 and 45, have also been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.
The protests turned violent after Vickrum Digwa was sentenced for the murder of Henry Nowak, following a wrongful arrest by police on racism charges. Demonstrators gathered outside Southampton Central Police Station before moving to Digwa's house, where they protested Hampshire Police's handling of the case. The situation escalated, with bricks, fence panels, industrial bins, chairs, and traffic cones thrown at officers as the unrest continued into the night.
New Charges Filed
Hampshire Police confirmed that three more men have now been charged. Darren Medhurst, 36, of Carnation Road, Southampton, has been charged with violent disorder. Jordan Hambleton, 19, of Rollesbrook Gardens, Southampton, faces the same charge, along with Callum Darch, 27, of St Blaize Road, Romsey. All three have been remanded in custody and are scheduled to appear at Southampton Magistrates' Court tomorrow.
Additionally, an 18-year-old man, a 34-year-old man, and a 45-year-old man, all from Southampton, and a 41-year-old man from Basingstoke, have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and remain in custody. A 16-year-old girl from Southampton was also arrested on suspicion of violent disorder but has been released on conditional bail pending further enquiries.
So far, eleven people have appeared in court in connection with the violence.
