Mersey Ferries Suspended After Body Found in River

Mersey Ferries services have been suspended after a man's body was discovered in the River Mersey on Monday, June 15. Merseyside Police received a report at approximately 12:15pm that a body had been found in the water. Emergency services, including Merseyside Police, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, North West Ambulance Service, and the Coastguard, responded to the scene, and a cordon was established.

Following investigations, police confirmed the body of a man was recovered from the river. The man has not yet been formally identified. A section of the Pier Head leading to the front of the Gerry Marsden Terminal was closed from just after 1pm. The cordon was partially lifted around 2:30pm, but the landing stage and the terminal building remained closed.

Mersey Ferries announced on social media at 1:44pm that services were suspended and would provide updates on when they might resume. Staff informed dozens of visitors that the ferries would be off for the rest of the day, advising them to request refunds or return the following day.

Paul Kivvle, a 63-year-old busker who frequently performs at Pier Head, told reporters he was unaware of the reason for the emergency response until informed. He expressed sadness, noting that such incidents are not uncommon in the area. One visitor, who arrived with the intention of boarding the ferry, expressed shock and sympathy for the man's family.

Firefighters and paramedics left the scene by 2:15pm, while the Coastguard and some police officers remained. The full story is available on the Liverpool Echo website.
