FIFA Drops Referee Omar Artan from World Cup Over US Visa Denial

FIFA has removed Somali referee Omar Artan from the list of officials for the 2026 World Cup just days before the tournament begins, following his denial of entry into the United States. Artan, who was named Africa's Referee of the Year for 2025 by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), would have become the first Somali national to officiate at a men's World Cup finals.

Why Was Omar Artan Dropped?

Artan was officially dropped after being denied entry into the United States by Customs and Border Protection officers at Miami International Airport. The US Department of Homeland Security confirmed that after an additional inspection upon arrival, he was deemed 'inadmissible due to vetting concerns.' Specific details regarding the nature of these concerns were not provided.

Geopolitical Context

While official reasons remain private, Somalia is among several countries on a strict travel ban list maintained by the US administration. This policy significantly affects entry and immigration processes for Somali nationals, likely contributing to Artan's denial.

Artan's Reaction

Speaking to Reuters, Artan expressed gratitude and resilience: 'I would like to thank Fifa and CAF for all their support and I promise to keep my refereeing levels up as I concentrate on the future. I want to thank the football family for their messages and wish my colleagues all the best success during the World Cup and I look forward to joining them again in future competitions.'

FIFA's Stance

FIFA confirmed that Artan will miss the entire tournament, emphasizing that the world governing body cannot intervene in host country immigration decisions. In a statement, FIFA said: 'FIFA is not involved in host country immigration processes, including visa adjudications, and has been informed by authorities that Mr Artan's status will not be changed at present. In line with previous FIFA events, a host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and who is admitted into their country.'

Next Steps

The Somali Football Federation (SFF) has contacted FIFA seeking clarification on the matter. A Somali embassy official in Nairobi told the BBC that Artan had been issued a diplomatic passport specifically to avoid such problems, after earlier visa troubles. The situation remains unresolved, with Artan's historic opportunity now blocked.
