Train passengers across southern England are being warned of major disruption that is expected to last for the remainder of the day, following a fault with a radio communication system. The problem, which emerged shortly before 9am on Thursday, has severely affected the ability of train drivers and signallers to communicate, leading to widespread delays and cancellations.
Extent of the Disruption
National Rail Enquiries has issued a warning that passengers could face delays of up to 45 minutes or have their services cancelled altogether. The disruption is anticipated to continue until the end of the day, with no immediate resolution in sight. Multiple train operators are impacted, including CrossCountry, Gatwick Express, Great Western Railway, London Overground, Southern, South Western Railway, and Thameslink.
South Western Railway Hit Hardest
South Western Railway has been particularly affected, advising passengers that delays could reach up to 90 minutes or result in cancellations across its entire network. The company has stated that there is currently no estimated time for when the fault will be resolved, leaving commuters facing significant uncertainty.
Passengers are advised to check their journey details before travelling and to allow extra time for their trips. The fault is with the radio communication system used by train drivers and signallers, which is critical for safe and efficient train operations. Engineers are working to fix the problem, but the complexity of the issue means that a quick solution is unlikely.
