Chet Hanks, the 35-year-old son of actor Tom Hanks, has revealed he is stranded in Colombia after travelling without his US passport. The musician and actor took to Instagram over the weekend to share his predicament, explaining that he had been in Puerto Rico for a friend's birthday and spontaneously decided to visit another friend in Medellín.
Hanks, who holds dual US-Greek citizenship after his parents were naturalised in Greece in 2020, said he only brought his Greek passport because his US passport was nearly expired. Upon attempting to fly back to the US, he was told he needed a green card to enter his home country with a foreign passport, despite being an American citizen.
“I literally have no f***ing idea what I’m gonna do,” Hanks said in a video. “And the only embassy to get this s*** settled is in Bogotá. I don’t want to go to Bogotá, so yeah. Free me.” Bogotá is approximately 250 miles from Medellín, or a one-hour flight away.
Fans showed little sympathy, with one suggesting he should have “pulled the ‘my dad is…’ card”. Others shared references to his father’s 2000 film Cast Away, about a man stranded on a deserted island. Chet Hanks is one of two sons of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson; Tom also has two children from a previous marriage.
