Micro-Staycations: Why Brits Holiday an Hour from Home
Micro-Staycations: Holiday an Hour from Home

Micro-staycations are the latest travel trend in the UK, as more holidaymakers opt for destinations close to home. Mindful of steep airfares and global uncertainty, Britons are staying very close to home, leading some to ask: is Milton Keynes the new Malaga?

What is a Micro-Staycation?

It is like a holiday, only smaller. Instead of going abroad, people stay within 100 miles of home. The Camping and Caravanning Club, with 730,000 members, reports a 6% increase in members traveling 51-100 miles to their holiday destination this year. There has also been a 7% drop in the average distance traveled compared to last year.

Why the Shift?

Cost of living, global conflict, and uncertainty are driving this trend. Home is where the budget is. The philosopher Immanuel Kant never traveled far from his hometown, but today's micro-staycationers are more pragmatic. Caravanning enthusiast Rebecca Humphrey told the Daily Mail: 'I think a lot of people think you've got to travel really far to all these amazing places, but actually there's always so many gorgeous places on your doorstep that you might not have heard about.'

Airbnb also revealed that UK staycations are booming, with Britons heading to unlikely inland destinations like Harrow, Stirling, Stretford, and Milton Keynes. These places offer proximity to major cities, lower costs, and more space.

So, yes, we are nearly there. Don't say: 'No, not the Scottish one – Perth in Australia, Qantas flies direct...'
