A 64-year-old British pilgrim has died after falling into the Robo River in northern Spain. The incident occurred in Puente la Reina, a town along the famous Way of St James pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
The man is believed to have lost his balance while attempting to cross an improvised bridge made of tree trunks near a hotel. His body was discovered early this morning by a local who alerted the police. Emergency responders, including firefighters, attended the scene but were unable to save him.
It is thought the man's body may have lain undiscovered for several hours after he failed to arrive at his booked accommodation. Local reports indicate he was found near the Hotel Jake, on the road out of Puente la Reina towards Pamplona. Police are investigating, but sources suggest the death was a tragic accident.
The improvised bridge was described as being about 10 feet high. This incident follows a similar tragedy in September 2019, when an Irish pilgrim drowned after taking a sunset swim in the sea at Finisterre, Galicia.
