New estimates for Valve's Steam Machine suggest the device will be significantly more expensive than originally anticipated. While the company has not officially announced pricing, industry insiders indicate the cost is 'nowhere near' the console-like price point first discussed in November 2025.
Price Expectations Shift Dramatically
Valve initially pitched the Steam Machine as an affordable way to play PC games on a big screen, similar to the Steam Deck experience. The company aimed for a price comparable to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. However, according to Insider Gaming's Mike Straw, internal discussions now place the device much higher than those early plans. Straw noted on X that the price is 'nowhere near' where it was originally planned, though he did not specify the exact figure. He estimated a final retail price between $1,300 and $1,500 based on his gut feeling.
Market Trends and Valve's Own Hardware
The price hike aligns with broader industry trends. Sony's PS5 Pro now costs UK customers £789, and Valve's own Steam Deck OLED saw a 35% increase, jumping from £479 to £649. The 1TB Steam Deck now sells for £779, and the Steam Machine is expected to be even more expensive. In February, one analyst estimated that building a comparable PC would cost north of £900. Valve has stated it would price the Steam Machine similarly to building a PC of equivalent specs, but market fluctuations make the final price uncertain.
Launch Window and Availability
Valve is targeting a summer 2026 release, slightly later than the original 'first half of 2026' window. Recent updates to SteamOS, including welcome tour screens, suggest a launch is imminent. The Steam Machine is expected to launch no later than the end of September, likely with a queue system for orders following the release of the Steam Controller. More details on availability will be reported as they emerge.
