Lexar Silver Pro Memory Card Review: Speed and Storage for Photographers
Lexar Silver Pro SD Card Review: Fast Speeds Tested

Memory cards can be a significant investment for photographers, who need both speed and storage capacity. I tested a card that promised both: the Lexar Silver Pro 256GB UHS-II SD memory card.

First Impressions

If you use a digital camera or video camera, you have likely used a Lexar memory card, even if you didn't realize it. Lexar is a leading brand alongside SanDisk and ProGrade. As an amateur photographer, I've owned many memory cards, but this is the largest I've had, with 256GB of storage. It is also my first UHS-II technology card, featuring a second row of contacts for faster transfer speeds.

Performance in the Field

I take many photos of birds and deer at a local wildlife park, so quick processing is essential. Previous cards caused buffering that slowed down my shooting. With the Lexar Silver Pro, I had no complaints. It offers up to 280 MB/s read and 160 MB/s write speeds with a V60 video rating.

I shoot in RAW format to rescue photos in Lightroom later. RAW files are larger, and my D500 camera can store about 8,000 RAW images on this card, though the manufacturer claims up to 44,000 pictures depending on camera and format. The card is suitable for 4K video and can record hours of high-spec footage, varying by resolution.

Compatibility and Value

The memory card works with DSLR and mirrorless cameras. After a full day of use, I found it effortless. Quality storage comes at a price, but this card is a well-priced alternative to more expensive options. Even as an enthusiastic amateur, I was pleased with its performance, and it is equally capable for professionals.

I captured an insect on a chive flower with this card, and I was reasonably pleased with the result.

Price and Reviews

The Lexar Silver Pro 256GB is available for £106.99 from Amazon. Reviews are generally positive: one user called it a solid performer with fast read and write speeds for continuous shooting and 4K work. Another reviewer noted that their third card had a slightly slower write speed (135-140 MB/s) and was 20-30% more expensive than previous purchases.

Alternatives

Other options include the Integral Momentum and ProGrade 256GB cards.
