A waitress has ignited a debate after advising servers to confront customers who leave no tip. Kat, known as @smarthotties on TikTok, shared her approach to dealing with non-tippers in a video that has divided opinion.
Kat explained: 'If they haven't left yet, walk up to whoever paid in front of everyone and say, "Hey sir/ma'am, I see you didn't leave a tip. Is there anything I could improve on with the service that you feel you could share with me?"' She claimed that 'nine times out of 10' the customer then offers an excuse and reaches for their wallet.
However, many social media users criticised her advice. One commented: 'I usually just think "Damn that stranger didn't pay my wage for my boss, guess that's how jobs work."' Another warned: 'If you come up to me and I put zero with a slash through it, I'm getting your manager.'
The video comes amid ongoing debate about tipping culture, particularly in the US where service workers often rely on tips. In the UK, tipping is generally considered optional, though some restaurants add a service charge.
This follows a separate incident where a waitress complained on Twitter about receiving a $70 tip on a $700 bill, half the expected 20 per cent, despite the customers praising her service.
