Morrisons has confirmed it will close 100 stores in July, a move described as a devastating blow to shoppers. The UK supermarket giant stated that the closures will predominantly impact its smaller Morrisons Daily outlets, often situated on high streets and in smaller communities.
Reasons for Closures
Morrisons explained that the performance of all company-owned stores in its Convenience business is under continuous review. Following this review, the company is proposing to take the tough but necessary decision to close a number of stores over the coming months. The process identified several stores acquired from McColl's that have been underperforming for years and remain loss-making despite remedial efforts.
Last month, Morrisons cited significant cost increases due to government policy choices as a contributing factor to the closures.
Impact on Post Offices
The closure of these Morrisons stores will also lead to the closure of local Post Offices housed within them, causing frustration among residents. Morrisons stated it would welcome applications from nearby retailers interested in hosting a Post Office inside their store.
More Card App Promotion
This announcement follows the launch of Morrisons' digital tournament sweepstake via its More Card app, offering a million-point jackpot. Customers can participate by selecting their team between June 8 and 24. Ten customers backing the winning team will become More Point Millionaires.
Gareth Lloyd, Head of Loyalty at Morrisons, said: Nothing says a summer of sport like a football sweepstake. This interactive More Card app game allows our customers to enjoy the football with some added rewards, from delicious bakery treats to ice creams and money-off vouchers and millions of More Points. We are encouraging everyone to sign up now and reveal their team ahead of kick-off. Good luck to all who take part!
Morrisons also noted that customers without the loyalty app can still benefit from wider match-day deals available to all shoppers when England and Scotland play.
