Morrisons has announced a major change to its bathroom facilities across nearly 500 supermarkets in the UK. The retailer will introduce stoma-friendly toilets in all 497 of its full-sized stores that have accessible bathrooms, marking a significant milestone for inclusivity.
The supermarket chain acknowledges that shopping trips can be challenging for individuals with a stoma, as standard accessible toilets often lack the necessary space or equipment. Morrisons aims to champion independence, dignity, and comfort for both customers and employees with these new facilities.
Features of the New Toilets
The stoma-friendly toilets will include wall hooks for securely hanging clothing or bags, shelves for medical supplies, discreet bins for waste disposal, and mirrors positioned to assist with appliance checks. These upgrades are designed to meet the real-world needs of the stoma community.
Collaboration with Experts
Morrisons worked alongside Colostomy UK and Scottish Parliament member Edward Mountain to ensure the facilities address the specific requirements of stoma users. A company spokesperson stated: "Not all disabilities are invisible, but they all deserve the same level of care. These upgrades are part of our wider commitment to accessible shopping."
Other Recent Initiatives
This follows Morrisons' partnership with the NHS to place cancer advice on bath and shower products, as well as the rollout of sanitary bins in all male customer toilets across 500 stores to support men with incontinence.
