Former Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has been released by Mexican side Monterrey after a turbulent spell that saw him score just one goal in 20 appearances. The 30-year-old Frenchman agreed to terminate his contract, which was set to run until 2026 with an option for an additional year.
Martial's Career Takes Another Hit
Martial joined Monterrey in September 2024 after a stint at AEK Athens in the Greek Super League, where he scored nine times in 24 games. However, his time in Mexico was marred by injuries and disciplinary issues. A dislocated shoulder in February sidelined him, and his final appearance came on March 18 against Cruz Azul in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Later that month, Martial was reportedly barred from first-team training after clashing with manager Nicolas Sanchez. According to Mexican outlet TUDN, Martial was furious when 20-year-old Joaquin Moxica was substituted on in the 74th minute during a 3-0 deficit against Chivas de Guadalajara, while he remained an unused substitute. His outburst led to punishment and exclusion from the squad for the remaining five matches of the season.
A Dramatic Fall from Grace
Martial's release marks his third free agency in as many years, following his departure from Manchester United in 2024 and his exit from AEK Athens. Once tipped to become one of the world's best attackers after his £36m move from Monaco in 2015, Martial scored on his debut against Liverpool and netted 17 goals in his first season. He reached double figures in four of his first five seasons at Old Trafford, peaking with 23 goals in the 2019/20 campaign.
However, his form declined thereafter. He fell down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag and scored just twice in 19 matches during his final season at United. After nine years in Manchester, he left in 2024.
What's Next for Martial?
Now a free agent, Martial will need to find a seventh club in his career. His options may be limited given his recent form and disciplinary record. Monterrey, one of North America's biggest clubs, had high expectations for the forward, but his tenure ended in disappointment.
