A YouTuber has revealed what he believes is the UK's finest supermarket bakery after taking part in a blind taste test. The content creator, known as Ksans, put bakery staples from Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Waitrose and Lidl through their paces, tasting everything from doughnuts and bread rolls to sausage rolls and pizza slices.
Ksans kicked off the challenge by sampling crusty rolls from each supermarket before progressing to the other items. He then instructed his cameraman to choose a "mystery item" from each shop, with an assortment of sweet goodies making it into the final round.
Crusty Rolls Round
The first blind taste test focused on crusty rolls, with Ksans beginning with Sainsbury's entry, giving it seven out of 10. Lidl's roll came next and though he considered it "too soft" for his taste, he gave it a score of 6.5. Tesco's crusty roll landed in fourth place in his ratings, with Ksans likening it to something you'd find at a food truck and handing it six out of 10. He then tried Morrisons' "nice and crunchy" roll, though he believed it merited no higher than 5.5. Waitrose claimed victory in the category owing to its "nice level of crunch on the outside" while staying "soft on the inside". He added: "It tastes absolutely fresh, so I'll probably give it an eight out of 10."
Savoury Items: Pizza and Sausage Rolls
For the following round, Ksans switched his focus to savoury offerings, sampling pizza slices from Waitrose, Sainsbury's and Lidl. He was particularly impressed with Lidl's offering, commending the base, cheese and toppings before awarding it 7.5 out of 10. Waitrose secured the same score thanks to its "super soft" dough and "nice and mild taste". Sainsbury's, on the other hand, fell short of expectations. Ksans branded the pizza as "disappointing" and "hard", handing it a score of 5.5.
The YouTuber then turned his attention to sausage rolls. Morrisons' effort was deemed soft yet "too minty", though he commended its texture and gave it 6.5 out of 10. Sampling Tesco's sausage roll, Ksans remarked that the pastry melted in the mouth and highlighted its satisfying crunch. Favouring its overall taste, he awarded it an eight, placing Tesco at the top while Sainsbury's languished at the bottom.
Jam Doughnuts
The third round saw Ksans tasting jam doughnuts from all five supermarkets. He was notably underwhelmed by Morrisons' "hard" doughnut and suggested the jam tasted almost like tomato ketchup, giving it a mere two out of 10. Topping the rankings was Sainsbury's jam doughnut, which claimed first place with a score of 7.7. Tesco came in second, followed by Lidl and Waitrose.
Mystery Items Finale
For the final test, Ksans blind-ranked five mystery bakery items: Morrisons' sprinkle iced finger bun, Lidl's Dubai chocolate muffin, Waitrose's cherry and almond Bakewell, Tesco's cinnamon twist and Sainsbury's apple and cinnamon baton. Tesco's offering came in fifth place with two points, with Sainsbury's close behind on four. Morrisons took third place with 5.5 points, Waitrose came in second with 7.8 points, while Lidl stormed to the top spot with eight points.
Once all the scores were added up, Ksans crowned Lidl as his top supermarket bakery overall, taking into consideration the food on offer, the range available and the in-store layout. The surprising winner proves that good taste doesn't need to come at a high price.
