Homeowners are being urged to avoid leaving patio doors open during hot weather to prevent long-term damage to their flooring. The summer months can cause significant harm to interiors, but many people are unaware of everyday habits that lead to costly repairs.
Sunlight and Heat Damage
Stephen Latham, Managing Director at J2 Flooring, explains that strong sunlight can cause uneven fading near doors and windows. Areas exposed to daily sunlight gradually fade differently from covered sections. During heatwaves, floors naturally expand, leading to lifting edges, movement around joins, and uneven areas becoming more visible.
Debris and Abrasion
Increased foot traffic between garden and house brings in patio grit, tiny stones, and rough debris trapped under shoes. These grind against the same sections of flooring, stripping away protective finishes and leaving dull tracks. Once sunlight hits worn areas, they reflect light differently, making pathways more obvious.
Removing shoes before entering is essential to prevent scratching and lasting damage. Dry summer debris like grass clippings carry soil and grit that scratch the protective surface layer.
Sunscreen Stains
Sunscreen contains oils that transfer easily from skin onto floors, especially in hot weather. These oily patches attract dust and dirt, leading to permanently marked areas.
Homeowners are advised to use doormats, remove shoes, and clean floors promptly to avoid these issues.
