Plusnet has launched a competitive full fibre broadband deal at £17.99 per month for the first six months, directly challenging Giffgaff's recently announced £5 offer. While Giffgaff's headline price is lower, Plusnet's deal may be more accessible for many households.
Giffgaff's Broadband Offer
Giffgaff, known for its affordable mobile plans, recently entered the broadband market with a tempting offer: full fibre for just £5 per month for the first six months. This applies to a 24-month contract, with the remaining 18 months costing £25 per month for 200Mbps speeds. Higher speeds up to 900Mbps are available at £32 per month. However, Giffgaff's broadband uses Virgin Media's network, limiting availability to areas served by that infrastructure.
Plusnet's Alternative
For those in areas only covered by Openreach (owned by BT), Plusnet's offer is a strong alternative. The £17.99 per month introductory rate lasts six months for a 74Mbps connection, rising to £30.99 thereafter. Plusnet also offers a faster 900Mbps tier at £20.99 for the first six months, increasing to £31.99. Both deals require a 24-month contract.
Price Increases and Considerations
Like many broadband contracts, Plusnet's prices rise annually on April 1 by £4 per month. Customers should ensure they can afford the full contract term. BT itself offers 150Mbps for £23.99 per month with similar annual increases, providing twice the speed of Plusnet's base plan for a higher initial cost.
When choosing between these deals, consider coverage, speed requirements, and long-term costs. Giffgaff's £5 offer is unbeatable for eligible areas, but Plusnet provides a solid option for Openreach-only households.
