A pub in central Newcastle that quickly became a favourite among Newcastle United fans has closed its doors less than two years after opening. The Magpie, located on Percy Street, first opened in December 2024 with much excitement, but it has now shut down. However, the closure is not the end for the venue, as it is set to re-open as a brand new establishment.
A Brief History of The Magpie
The site was previously home to The Goose, a famous pub that closed in 2024, causing shock and upset among locals. After an extensive makeover, it reopened as The Magpie, a 'proper Geordie' bar. The decor featured a Geordie mural at the centre of the bar, including famous faces like Sam Fender, Sarah Millican, Cheryl, Alan Shearer, Les Ferdinand, and Bruno Guimaraes. Geordie quotes such as 'tell me ma, ma...' and 'gan canny' were dotted around, along with Kevin Keegan's famous line: 'I will love it if we beat them, love it.'
Popular Among Fans and Locals
The Magpie quickly became a hit with Newcastle United fans, thanks to its proximity to St James' Park. It also attracted other locals with drink deals like Two Quid Thursday and a popular Sunday carvery. However, after months of silence on social media, with the last Facebook post promoting a boxing match in April, the pub's closure has been confirmed.
A spokesperson confirmed the closure to ChronicleLive on Monday, adding that plans are underway for the venue to reopen as another establishment. No further details have been released yet.
