Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is being considered for a Premier League return as newly promoted Ipswich Town search for a manager to replace Kieran McKenna, who recently stepped down.
Solskjaer in Contention for Ipswich Role
McKenna, who previously worked under Solskjaer at Manchester United, announced his departure from Portman Road last week. His exit comes shortly after guiding the club to a third promotion in five years, leaving Ipswich needing a new leader for their Premier League survival campaign.
Solskjaer has been out of work since being sacked by Besiktas in August last year. The Norwegian was previously linked with a return to Manchester United after Ruben Amorim's dismissal, but the club appointed Michael Carrick instead.
The former Manchester United manager would welcome the chance to prove himself in the top flight after an underwhelming end to his tenure at Old Trafford. Before that, he managed Cardiff City, where the club was relegated to the Championship.
According to the BBC, Solskjaer and Gary O'Neil are among the candidates being considered by Ipswich. O'Neil currently manages French club Strasbourg but has a track record of keeping Premier League clubs in the top flight, having done so with Bournemouth in 2023 and leading Wolves to 14th place.
McKenna's Departure
McKenna's decision to leave Ipswich came amid links to the Fulham job after Marco Silva's exit. However, the 40-year-old stated he stepped down to take a break from football and spend more time with his family.
"I feel this is the right time for me to step aside," he said. "I do so with great pride at the incredible progress we have made and with huge hope and optimism for the future of the club."
