Rare 1983 2p Coin 'New Pence' Worth £1,000

A two penny coin is experiencing a surge in value, potentially worth a staggering sum, but it must feature one key detail. Collectors are urging the public to check their change for this special piece.

The Rare 2p Coin Worth £1,000

A TikTok user known as @CoinCollectingWizard, with nearly 270,000 followers, shared a video where he cleaned a coin worth £1,000 and explained the difference between standard and rare pieces. He stated: "Did you know about the New Pence 2p coin worth £1,000? Don't worry though this one is 1971 and not the rare date."

He continued: "After the design changed from New Pence to Two Pence in 1982, a mistake was made during production of a small number of 1983 coins. If it says New Pence on the reverse instead of the words Two Pence then you have found it."

How to Identify the Valuable Coin

Any 2p coins minted between 1971 and 1981 display the inscription 'NEW PENCE', while those from 1982 onwards read 'TWO PENCE'. Most 'New Pence' coins are common and worth face value, except for the extremely rare 1982 error coin. However, the most desirable is the 1983 version struck with the old 'New Pence' die.

The Royal Mint accidentally produced a small number of 1983 coins using the old die, primarily included in special commemorative sets such as the Martini-Rossi or Heinz sets. If you find a 1983 coin with 'NEW PENCE' on the tails side, it could be worth around £1,000.

Collector Insights and Value

In the past, these coins were valued at around £400, but they now command higher prices at auction. The TikTok video garnered hundreds of likes and comments, with one user claiming to have the coin, while others warned against cleaning coins, as it can reduce their value.

To check your change, look at the tails side of the coin. If it says 'NEW PENCE' and the date is 1983, it could be valuable. If the date is between 1971 and 1981, it is a standard coin worth just 2p.
