Lidl Beats Tesco, Waitrose, Sainsbury's in Supermarket Bakery Taste Test
Lidl Wins UK Supermarket Bakery Taste Test Over Rivals

A YouTuber has revealed the findings of a blind taste test designed to discover Britain's finest supermarket bakery. The content creator, known as Ksans, tested bakery staples from Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Waitrose and Lidl, trying everything from doughnuts and bread rolls to sausage rolls and pizza slices.

Crusty Rolls Showdown

Ksans kicked off the experiment by tasting crusty rolls from each retailer. He commenced with Sainsbury's product, granting it seven out of 10. Lidl's roll was next, though he believed it was 'too soft' for his taste, leading to a rating of 6.5. Tesco's crusty roll secured fourth position, with Ksans likening it to something from a food truck and assigning it six out of 10. He subsequently tried Morrisons' 'nice and crunchy' roll, though he considered it worthy of just 5.5. Waitrose emerged victorious in the category owing to its 'nice level of crunch on the outside' while staying 'soft on the inside'. He added: 'It tastes absolutely fresh, so I'll probably give it an eight out of 10.'

Savoury Selections

For the subsequent round, Ksans shifted his focus to savoury options, sampling pizza slices from Waitrose, Sainsbury's and Lidl. He proved especially taken with Lidl's product, commending the base, cheese and toppings before giving it 7.5 out of 10. Waitrose earned an identical score due to its 'super soft' dough and 'nice and mild taste'. Sainsbury's, conversely, didn't meet expectations. Ksans characterised the pizza as 'disappointing' and 'hard', awarding it a score of 5.5.

The YouTuber subsequently proceeded to sausage rolls. Morrisons' variant was characterised as soft yet 'too minty', though he commended its texture and gave it 6.5 out of 10. Upon sampling Tesco's sausage roll, Ksans noted the pastry dissolved in the mouth and praised its crunch. Scoring its general flavour, he awarded it an eight, placing Tesco ahead while Sainsbury's remained bottom.

Sweet Treats

The third round featured Ksans tasting jam doughnuts from all five retailers. He proved notably underwhelmed by Morrisons' 'hard' doughnut and suggested the jam resembled tomato ketchup, awarding it merely two out of 10. At the opposite end of the scale sat Sainsbury's jam doughnut, which claimed top spot with a score of 7.7. Tesco came second, followed by Lidl and Waitrose.

Mystery Items Finale

For the concluding challenge, Ksans blind-ranked five mystery bakery products: Morrisons' sprinkle iced finger bun, Lidl's Dubai chocolate muffin, Waitrose's cherry and almond bakewell, Tesco's cinnamon twist and Sainsbury's apple and cinnamon baton. Tesco's offering secured fifth position with two points, while Sainsbury's followed with four. Morrisons claimed third place with 5.5 points, Waitrose took second with 7.8, while Lidl secured the top position with eight points.

Overall Winner

Following the final tally, Ksans declared Lidl as his preferred supermarket bakery overall, considering the products available, the range on offer and the shop floor arrangement. The verdict suggests that good taste does not have to come at a high price, with Lidl outperforming more premium rivals like Waitrose and Tesco.
