Millions of Britons flock to Spain every year, but it turns out that Spanish locals have been using a nickname for tourists for years. The term 'guiri', pronounced 'guee-ree', is commonly directed at visitors who enjoy letting loose and drinking, according to the Mirror.
Origins of 'Guiri'
Some suggest that 'guiri' stems from the Basque term 'giri', meaning 'blonde' or 'fair-skinned'. Others contend that its roots lie in a Hindi expression used by the Indian diaspora to describe white individuals. In modern Spanish context, 'guiri' generally refers to a white person with lighter skin than most Spaniards.
Is 'Guiri' Offensive?
Leah Pattem, a journalist who frequently visits Spain, maintains that the expression is insulting. She wrote: "A guiri is also categorised as naïve and/or ignorant, trapped in their own culture due to refusal or inability to integrate. They will dress wrong, be sunburnt and generally look hot and bothered." While most Spaniards argue the word is not offensive, Pattem notes that it makes sweeping assumptions based on appearance, nationality, or behaviour.
Overtourism Tensions in Spain
Tensions have risen over mass tourism, particularly in the Canary Islands, where protests were held across Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and La Palma. Island leaders asked for calm amid growing local frustration. Organisers insist they are not rallying against tourists themselves, but against the lack of measures to protect the islands from the industry's pressures.
Calls for Tougher Action
Residents have called for a tourism tax and stricter controls. In 2023, Canary Islands president Fernando Clavijo urged demonstrators to "be responsible", warning that British tourists inject millions into the local economy each spring and summer. He stressed that tourism remains a main source of employment and wealth across the Canaries.
Protests about overtourism have taken place across parts of Spain, with growing fears that the islands are teetering on the edge of crisis as they struggle to manage visitor numbers.
