Ritz Crackers Recalled in US Over Life-Threatening Peanut Allergy Labelling Error
Ritz Crackers Recalled Over Life-Threatening Allergy Risk

Major snack food manufacturer Mondelēz Global LLC has issued a voluntary recall for a specific batch of its popular Ritz crackers in the United States. The urgent action was taken after a critical labelling error was discovered, posing a potentially life-threatening risk to consumers with a peanut allergy.

Details of the Ritz Cracker Recall

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall on Friday, 4th December 2025. The company is recalling 70 cases of Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches. The issue stems from individually wrapped packs inside the cartons being incorrectly labelled as the Cheese variety, when they actually contain the Peanut Butter variety.

For individuals with a peanut allergy or severe sensitivity, consuming the mislabelled product could trigger a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction, the FDA's notice warned. The recall is specifically for 27.6-ounce cartons containing 20 individually wrapped packs. Affected products have a UPC of 44000 07584 2 and carry Best Dates of either 8th January 2026 or 15th January 2026.

Where Were the Products Sold and What Should Consumers Do?

Mondelēz confirmed the recalled cases were shipped to retailers across eight US states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Oklahoma. The firm stated the recall is being conducted "out of an abundance of caution" and is separate from a similar incident earlier in the year, despite some overlap in product codes.

No illnesses have been reported to date. However, consumers who have purchased the product and have a peanut allergy are strongly advised not to eat it. They should throw it away immediately or contact Mondelēz Global LLC directly with any concerns.

The Seriousness of Food Allergy Risks

This incident highlights the severe dangers posed by food labelling errors. In the United States, peanuts are classified as one of the nine major food allergens. The others are milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, wheat, soybeans, tree nuts, and sesame.

According to the FDA, allergic reactions can range from mild symptoms like hives to severe, life-threatening anaphylaxis, which may involve fatal respiratory problems and shock. This recall follows another recent allergy-related action in the US, where Silvestri Sweets Inc. recalled Choceur Holiday Bark products due to a packaging mix-up that could expose consumers to undeclared pecans or wheat.

Authorities continue to stress the importance of accurate food labelling to protect public health, particularly for the millions of people living with serious food allergies.
