Pension Age Disability Payment Tips to Help Older People Claim Up to £458 Monthly
Pension Age Disability Payment Tips for Up to £458 Monthly

Charity Independent Age has shared essential tips to help older people in Scotland complete Pension Age Disability Payment application forms. The benefit, which replaces Attendance Allowance north of the border, is administered by Social Security Scotland rather than the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

Understanding Pension Age Disability Payment

Pension Age Disability Payment (PADP) is designed to assist people over State Pension age who have a disability, illness, or long-term health condition requiring help with personal care or supervision. The charity warns that many pensioners underestimate the importance of fully explaining daily difficulties when filling in application forms.

Key Tips for a Successful Application

Independent Age advises applicants to describe how their condition affects them on both good and bad days, providing clear examples wherever possible. This includes challenges with washing, dressing, preparing meals, managing medication, communicating, or staying safe at home.

The charity also emphasizes that eligibility is based on the help or supervision someone needs, not the support they already receive. Older people should not assume they will not qualify simply because they lack a carer.

Instead of merely listing a diagnosis, applicants should explain how symptoms impact their ability to complete everyday activities safely and consistently. For instance, someone with arthritis, dementia, or breathing difficulties should detail how these conditions affect daily life.

Supporting Evidence and Payment Rates

Independent Age recommends including supporting evidence such as medical letters, prescriptions, or information from healthcare professionals to strengthen an application. PADP is not means-tested, so savings and income do not affect eligibility.

For 2026/27, the payment rates are:

  • Lower rate: £76.70 per week
  • Higher rate: £114.60 per week

The higher rate is typically paid to those needing help or supervision both day and night, or who are terminally ill. This means eligible older people could receive up to £458.40 every four weeks.

Application Process and Further Help

Independent Age encourages older people not to be discouraged by the application process and to seek advice if struggling. The charity provides online guidance and videos explaining PADP and what information to include.

To apply, individuals must have reached State Pension age and had care needs during the day or night for at least six months due to a disability or health condition. Those with terminal illness can use a fast-track process. PADP cannot be claimed alongside Attendance Allowance.

For those in England or Wales, Attendance Allowance is available through DWP. In Scotland, applications can be made online, by phone, post, or in person via mygov.scot. The Social Security Independent Advocacy Service, provided by Advice Direct Scotland, offers free support for disabled people to understand and exercise their rights.
