Drying laundry during winter can be a challenge for households trying to cut energy bills, but a simple method using a dehumidifier could be the answer. According to laundry expert Mark Walker from Denver Wash and Fold, dehumidifiers can dry clothes faster than tumble dryers or heated airers while also preventing damp and mould.
Speaking to The Express, Walker said: "Banish mould and mildew for good by introducing a dehumidifier into your winter drying routine. Not only will it remove moisture from your clothes faster, it'll also make your home into a healthier environment." He recommends placing the device near the drying area and letting it fill up while you enjoy a hot drink.
To maximise effectiveness, Walker suggests putting garments through an extra spin cycle before hanging them, as this removes excess water. "On average, it takes less energy to spin water out of the load than it does to heat it up and dry it," he explained. Ensuring good ventilation by opening windows during the day and spacing out laundry on the airer also speeds up drying.
Walker warns against draping washing directly over radiators, calling it a potential fire hazard and a breeding ground for condensation and mould. Instead, he recommends using a radiator drying rack, which is cheap and effective for speed-drying on cold days.
