Met Office Issues Red Alert for Hay Fever Amid Very High Pollen Levels
The Met Office has issued a red alert for hay fever, warning that millions of Britons are set to endure up to a week of very high pollen levels. This alert comes as spring temperatures are forecast to reach up to 24°C, bringing both warmth and misery for the nation's estimated 13 million hay fever sufferers.
Pollen Levels Peak Across the UK
According to Met Office maps, pollen levels are marked in red as very high today across all of England and Wales, as well as parts of Scotland. The southeast and East Anglia regions are expected to experience these elevated levels persisting into the weekend, exacerbating symptoms for those with seasonal allergies.
Peak tree pollen season has now arrived, triggering common hay fever symptoms such as runny noses, watery eyes, and migraines. Tree pollen allergies affect approximately 25% of all sufferers and are becoming increasingly prevalent among young people, a trend linked to climate change.
Health Advice for Hay Fever Sufferers
Allergy UK has provided key recommendations to help manage symptoms during this period of very high pollen levels:
- Stay indoors as much as possible and keep windows closed to reduce exposure.
- Shower after being outside to wash off pollen from skin and hair.
- Use antihistamines, wear wraparound sunglasses, and apply allergen balm around the nose when venturing outdoors.
Met Office meteorologist Honor Criswick commented on the weather conditions, stating, "For most, particularly across England and Wales, dry, settled, and lots of warm sunshine to go around. We could potentially see highs reaching around 23 to 24°C in parts."
This red alert serves as a critical reminder for hay fever patients to take preventive measures, as the combination of warm weather and high pollen levels poses significant challenges for allergy management across the UK.
