The Australian government has confirmed that a nationwide test of its new emergency warning system, AusAlert, will take place on Monday, July 27, 2026. All compatible electronic devices—including phones, smart watches, and tablets—will simultaneously emit a 10-second siren and display a test message. The system is scheduled for full implementation in October 2026.
What to Expect During the Test
At the designated times, devices will light up and sound an alarm. A message will appear stating: “TEST MESSAGE - AUSALERT. This is a TEST of AusAlert, Australia's new emergency warning system. NO ACTION IS REQUIRED. In an actual emergency, follow the instructions in the alert to keep yourself and others safe. Visit www.ausalert.gov.au for more information. This message is authorised by the Australian Government.” Recipients do not need to take any action.
Timing Across Time Zones
The test alert will be sent at the following local times:
- Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria: 2:00 pm AEST (UTC+10:00)
- Northern Territory, South Australia and Broken Hill: 1:30 pm ACST (UTC+9:30)
- Western Australia: 12:00 pm AWST (UTC+8:00)
How AusAlert Works in Emergencies
In an actual emergency, the system will provide details on the type of threat, its location, severity, recommended actions, and where to find further information. The Australian government touts AusAlert as a reliable method to quickly reach those in need. Given Australia's size—32 times larger than the UK—the system can target messages to areas as small as 160 metres across, enabling tailored alerts for natural disasters such as wildfires and tropical cyclones.
