Bournemouth, a classic British seaside resort on the Dorset coast, boasts seven miles of golden sand, a palm-lined promenade, and a grand Victorian pier. Travel journalist Amy Jones describes it as one of her favourite beaches in the world, drawing her back summer after summer. The town offers a nostalgic seaside experience with modern amenities, making it ideal for day trips or weekend escapes.
Location and Accessibility
Bournemouth is located on the south coast of England, less than a two-hour direct train journey from London Waterloo and just 30 minutes from Southampton. It neighbours Poole, home to the famous Sandbanks peninsula, known as 'Millionaires' Row' for its celebrity mansions. However, Bournemouth itself is less flashy, offering traditional seaside charm with Victorian architecture.
The town's seafront features an iconic pier and a giant Ferris wheel, while the promenade is lined with colourful beach huts. Holiday Cottages compared the palm-lined promenades to scenes from the French Riviera. Bournemouth feels more like a city than a town, with department stores, restaurant chains, and cafés, plus 2,000 acres of gardens and parks, some leading down to the coast.
Beach Experiences
Bournemouth Beach offers two distinctive areas. Near the town centre, the bustling seaside atmosphere centres around the Ferris wheel and pier, with attractions like climbing walls, fun fair amusements, mega slides, ice cream shacks, and gift shops. Further along, the Pavilion Theatre, Oceanarium, and Art @ West Beach add to the entertainment.
Alum Chine Beach, slightly quieter, is where Jones spent most of her time. It features colourful beach huts and a wide promenade ideal for roller-skating or cycling. Visitors can walk all the way to Sandbanks Beach, admiring multi-million-pound beachfront homes. The beach is family-friendly, with fish and chips shops and a Harvester restaurant offering seaside views.
Why Bournemouth Stands Out
Jones says, 'Bournemouth is far less flashy than Sandbanks, and that's what makes it such a fantastic beach day out.' She spent endless summers and weekends there without ever getting bored. The town combines classic seaside nostalgia with golden-sand beaches, making it a top choice for a quintessential British seaside experience.
