Mother Files Complaints Over Daughter's Euthanasia After Diary Reveals Assaults
Mother Files Complaints Over Daughter's Euthanasia Diary

Yolanda Ramos has filed two complaints with prosecutors in Barcelona and Tarragona, demanding an investigation into alleged sexual assaults against her daughter, Noelia Castillo Ramos, who died by euthanasia on March 26, 2026. Ramos claims that new evidence from Noelia's diary, given to her on the day of her death, reveals the identities of alleged assailants.

Mother's Legal Action Backed by Christian Lawyers

Represented by the Spanish Foundation of Christian Lawyers, Ramos seeks to identify the alleged attackers using details from the diary. She stated that the diary entries describe being forced to have sex by a Pakistani national and an incident in Salou, Tarragona, where she was drugged, given alcohol, and raped by three men. The family previously lacked conclusive evidence to report the incidents.

Noelia's Euthanasia Battle

Noelia, 25, became paraplegic after jumping from a roof following the alleged traumatic ordeal. Her request for euthanasia was approved in July 2024 by an independent Catalan body after assessments found she suffered from a serious, incurable condition and severe, chronic, and disabling suffering. The procedure was delayed by legal challenges from her father, supported by Christian Lawyers, but those appeals were rejected by the Spanish Constitutional Court and Supreme Court, and a final attempt at the European Court of Human Rights failed days before her death.

Diary Provides New Evidence

In a video released with a statement from Christian Lawyers, Ramos said: "Noelia spoke about the rapes on television, and on the very day she died, she gave me her diary. When I read it, I understood many things." Ramos gained access to evidence, including the diary, that had not been previously analyzed.

Noelia's Public Statements

Noelia spoke openly about her decision in interviews before her death. In one interview on Antena 3's program Y Ahora Sonsoles, she said: "I want to go now and stop suffering, period. None of my family is in favour of euthanasia. But what about all the pain I've suffered during all these years?" She described wanting to die looking beautiful, wearing her prettiest dress and makeup.

Father's Opposition

Noelia's father sought to block the euthanasia, arguing she suffered from mental disorders affecting her decision-making capacity and that her condition did not involve unbearable suffering. Noelia accused him of failing to respect her wishes, stating: "He hasn't respected my decision and he never will."

Spain's Euthanasia Law

Spain's euthanasia law, enacted in 2021, allows assisted dying for those with a serious and incurable illness or a chronic and disabling condition. Government figures show 426 assisted dying requests were approved in 2024. Spain is among nine European countries with laws permitting assisted dying under strict criteria.
