With temperatures soaring to 40C in parts of the UK this week, potentially breaking the all-time June record, experts have provided guidance on when to open and close windows to keep homes cool. The Met Office has issued a rare red alert for Wednesday and Thursday, warning of hazardous conditions and significant risk to life.
General Rule for Window Management
According to specialists at SCI Windows, the key principle is: open windows if the indoor temperature is higher than the outdoor temperature; otherwise, keep them closed to preserve cooler air inside. They recommend opening windows overnight and early in the morning before temperatures rise again, allowing air to circulate and create a flow that pushes cold air through each room.
Specific Timing Recommendations
Alan Reid, a windows expert at Art Windows and Doors, advises homeowners to start opening windows at 8pm when outdoor temperatures begin to drop. John Small, owner of UK housebuilder Ty Eco, suggests closing windows around 9am the next morning as temperatures climb again, as reported by the Border Counties Advertiser.
Security Considerations for Overnight Ventilation
Leaving windows open overnight poses security risks. Homeowners are encouraged to use night vent locks or 'night latches' found on many modern double-glazing systems, which allow windows to remain slightly ajar (about an inch) while secured. This enables safe nighttime thermal exchange while sleeping.
Expert Insight on Home Cooling
Dr Ben Roberts, a specialist in building performance and indoor environments at Loughborough University, emphasises the importance of managing heat balance. He explains: "With overheating, it's a simple heat balance problem. We have too much heat going in - and not enough heat going out. The sun's heat comes through windows, hot air infiltrates from outside, and even everyday activities like cooking, watching TV or running appliances all generate heat inside the home." He adds that opening windows during the day is counterproductive: "During the day, your home can be a cool battery. The last thing you want to do is bring in hot air." Instead, windows should stay closed during the day, with reflective blinds or light-coloured curtains drawn on the sunny side, and opened only in the evening when temperatures drop.
