The UK heatwave is set to end this weekend, with temperatures plummeting to 7°C in parts of northern England and Scotland on Sunday, July 19. After weeks of 30°C-plus sunshine across three heatwaves, unseasonably cool autumn conditions will return.
Temperature Drop Across the UK
According to WXCharts, the lowest temperatures will be seen in northern England, with 9°C forecast at 6am on Saturday (July 18) and 7°C in the same spot 24 hours later. In total, 15 forecast areas will be below 10°C on Saturday morning, and 70 will see single-digit temperatures on Sunday, mostly in northern England and the Scottish Highlands.
These areas cover 14 council regions. England's five include Westmorland, Cumberland, Northumberland, North Yorkshire, and County Durham. In Scotland, the nine areas are Highland, Aberdeenshire, Moray, Perth and Kinross, Argyll and Bute, Scottish Borders, Dumfries and Galloway, East Ayrshire, and South Ayrshire.
Regional Variations
While northern areas cool significantly, the south west of England will remain milder at 18°C on both weekend mornings. The forecast for Saturday and Sunday (July 19) indicates dry days with sun and cloud for most of the country.
The Met Office forecast for Thursday (July 16) to Sunday stated: “Staying dry and settled through the weekend. Further sunny spells, although cloud amounts generally increasing, perhaps bringing the odd shower. Very warm initially, with temperatures then returning closer to average.”
City Forecasts
London is forecast to see highs of 25°C and lows of 14°C this weekend. Cardiff will be slightly hotter, with highs of 26°C on Saturday and 25°C on Sunday, and lows of 15°C and 13°C respectively. In Scotland, Edinburgh faces 21°C highs and 11°C lows on Saturday, followed by 23°C and 13°C on Sunday. Over the Irish Sea, Belfast expects similar temperatures of 22°C on Saturday and 21°C on Sunday.
According to MetDesk, the change marks a return to average temperatures for mid-July, ending the prolonged heatwave that has affected the UK.
