DIY Two-Ingredient Mixture Keeps Floors Cleaner for Longer

Keeping floors spotless can be a daunting task, especially with pets, children, and daily wear and tear. However, a flooring expert has shared a simple mopping technique using just two ingredients that repels dust and keeps floors cleaner for longer.

Richard McKay, managing director at flooring company Sprung, recommends adding fabric conditioner to the water in your mop bucket. 'By adding one to two teaspoons into one litre of warm water and then using it to mop as usual with a microfibre mop, you can say hello to clean floors that are easy to maintain,' he said.

The fabric conditioner leaves a thin anti-static layer on the floor, which repels dust, dirt, and hair. 'This is because the softener leaves a thin anti-static layer which repels dust, dirt and hair. And it means your floors are cleaner for longer,' McKay explained. The cationic surfactants in fabric conditioner reduce static, preventing fluff from adhering to hard floors.

McKay advises using a lightly dampened mop on laminate, wood, or vinyl surfaces to avoid saturation. For those preferring a natural alternative, he suggests combining a teaspoon of white vinegar with a few drops of essential oil in water, which also repels dust and neutralises odours.
