Netflix's Shipwrecked: How Many Died in Costa Concordia Disaster?
Netflix's Shipwrecked: Costa Concordia Deaths Revealed

Netflix's new documentary Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea has become the most-watched title among UK subscribers, remaining number one nearly a week after release. The film features previously unseen footage from the 2012 Costa Concordia disaster and survivor testimonies.

The Tragedy and Its Toll

Out of more than 4,000 people on board, 32 lost their lives, including passengers and crew. The ship hit a rock and began to tilt, but the order to abandon ship was delayed by over an hour. Footage and translated recordings show the confusion and chaos that surrounded the situation.

Harrowing Details of Victims

Harrowing details emerged during Captain Francesco Schettino's trial about how some victims died. French passenger Francis Servel gave his wife his life vest as she couldn't swim, but he was then unable to find a lifeboat place. According to a report in The Guardian at the time, he either fell or threw himself into the sea but was sucked underwater by a whirlpool and died by asphyxiation.

Italian passenger Maria Grazia Trecarichi slid off the tilting ship while waiting to be rescued and drowned. Some passengers drowned while still aboard as water rose violently inside the tilting corridors. The final body wasn't found until November 2014, more than two years after the incident.

Captain's Conviction

Captain Schettino was convicted of manslaughter and abandoning ship, receiving 16 years behind bars in February 2015. The term consisted of ten years for manslaughter, five years for causing the shipwreck, and one year for abandoning passengers, to be served consecutively.
