Tenerife, the largest island in the Canary Islands archipelago off the coast of West Africa, has been named the best European island for a summer holiday, according to a new analysis by Saga. The island scored an impressive 95 out of 100, beating out popular Greek destinations thanks to its combination of natural beauty, fresh food, and abundant sunshine.
Sunshine and Beaches
Tenerife averages a whopping 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, the highest among European islands, making it ideal for long beach days. Its coastal highlights include Playa del Duque, one of the most famous beaches on the island, known for its golden sand and clear waters.
Beyond the Coast
But Tenerife offers more than just beaches. The Anaga laurel forests provide a dramatic highland landscape with sharp peaks, deep ravines, and a magical canopy of laurel trees. Scattered throughout are charming hamlets like Tagana, a quiet village built into the mountainside that preserves traditional customs and architecture. Tagana is also home to one of the oldest churches on the island, Nuestra Señora de las Nieves.
Affordable Travel
For British tourists, flights from UK airports to Tenerife in August start at just £151 return, according to Skyscanner. With its rich cultural history, lush forests, and stunning coastline, Tenerife has clearly earned its top spot for a summer getaway.
