Everton footballer Thierno Barry has released a new statement to clarify that the friends he invited to the match at the Emirates Stadium were not Arsenal fans, following an alleged attack after the game. The incident, which occurred after Everton's 2-0 defeat to Arsenal, has prompted an investigation by Merseyside Police.
Barry's Social Media Post and Clarification
Thierno Barry initially shared a video on social media that appeared to show his friends being targeted in the away end during the Premier League clash. In a follow-up post on X, the French midfielder firmly denied giving tickets to Arsenal supporters, stating that the individuals in the video were his personal friends who have supported him throughout his career.
Details of the Incident
Barry explained that his friends were wearing Everton shirts with his name on them and were approached twice during the match by other supporters questioning their allegiance. They clarified they were there to support Barry, not the opposing team. He also noted that some people visible in the videos were relatives of another Everton player, not his family members.
The Everton star described how his friends were confronted by a group of supporters who mistakenly believed they were celebrating an Arsenal goal. Barry emphasised that stewards witnessed the scene, and his friends were subjected to insults. He condemned the violence, asserting that it has no place in football.
Police Investigation and Club Response
Merseyside Police have launched an investigation into the incident. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers and stewards responded, with no serious injuries reported. Enquiries are ongoing, and they are working with both clubs to identify those involved. No arrests have been made so far.
Barry expressed full confidence in the authorities to establish the facts and stated he would not comment further out of respect for the investigation process.
Match Outcome and Context
The incident overshadowed Everton's 2-0 loss to Arsenal, with goals from Viktor Gyokeres and Max Dowman securing a crucial victory for the Gunners in the Premier League title race. Barry's statement highlights ongoing concerns about fan behaviour and safety at football matches.
