BBC Expert Urges 5.8 Million Carers to Claim £86 Benefit

People who take on caring responsibilities for another person may be entitled to more than just payments from the Department for Work and Pensions. BBC expert Iona Bain has urged individuals to check if they qualify for Carer's Allowance, revealing that approximately 5.8 million people in the UK are carers, and many could be eligible for this benefit.

What is Carer's Allowance?

Carer's Allowance provides £86.45 per week to individuals who care for someone for at least 35 hours each week. The person receiving care must also be in receipt of certain DWP benefits, such as Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or Disability Living Allowance (DLA). To be eligible, carers must be over 16 years old and earn less than £204 per week after tax.

Additional Benefits Beyond Financial Support

Iona Bain highlighted that claiming Carer's Allowance also provides National Insurance (NI) credits, which are crucial for building entitlement to the full state pension. She explained: "For every week of Carer's Allowance that you get, you also get National Insurance credits, and this will go towards making sure that you get your full state pension entitlement. This is so important because people who care for others often have to take time out of work, which can mean they drop out of the system and miss out on NI credits."

Potential Pitfalls and Complexities

However, Bain warned of complexities: "There are lots of intricacies with Carer's Allowance in terms of how it might impact the benefits of the person you are caring for." She advised carers not to be afraid to seek help and to check their eligibility thoroughly.

Who Counts as a Carer?

Bain clarified common misconceptions about what constitutes a carer. She stated: "You don't need to be related to the person you are caring for. You don't need to be living with them. You could be a close friend or a neighbour providing hands-on support." Caring duties can include helping with washing, dressing, cooking meals, managing bills, or doing shopping. "Caring encompasses so many different roles," she added.

Backdating and Regional Variations

Carer's Allowance payments can be backdated by up to three months. Different processes and benefits apply in Scotland and Northern Ireland. For more information, visit the Gov.uk website or contact Carers UK for application support.
