Liverpool manager Arne Slot has issued a stark warning to Sweden, stating he will have to "mess up the party" for them by likely withholding striker Alexander Isak from the upcoming World Cup playoffs. The £125 million summer signing is on the comeback trail from a broken leg but is not expected to be fit in time for Sweden's crucial matches.
Isak's Injury Woes Continue
Alexander Isak's first season with Liverpool has been severely disrupted by injuries, most notably a broken leg sustained in December's victory over Tottenham. This setback has limited him to just three goals for the Reds so far, and his recovery timeline has pushed his potential return to early April at the earliest.
Slot's Cautious Approach
Arne Slot had initially hoped Isak would return before the international break, but the striker is now set to miss Liverpool's next eight matches, including games against Tottenham, Galatasaray, and Brighton. Slot emphasized the need for caution, citing Isak's lengthy absence from training and match fitness.
"If you ask me now, I would say I don't expect that," Slot said regarding Isak's availability for Sweden. "We are still one-and-a-half weeks off, and there is always cooperation between club and country, but I don't expect him to play for us before that. Again, I have to mess up the party again."
World Cup Playoff Implications
Sweden face Ukraine in a World Cup playoff, with a potential final against either Poland or Albania for a place in the United States. However, Slot does not believe Isak will feature for Graham Potter's Swedish team, prioritizing the player's long-term health and Liverpool's interests.
Slot explained, "Let's say [he comes back] at the beginning of April, he has been out for three-and-a-half months and not trained with the team for three-and-a-half months. The last time he did that, it took him a while to get up to speed."
Managing Expectations
The Liverpool manager also tempered expectations about Isak's immediate impact upon return. He added, "I am really, really looking forward to having him back, but don't get the expectations again so high that the minute he is on the pitch, he is at the level of what we spent that money on."
This situation highlights the ongoing tension between club and country commitments, with Slot firmly prioritizing Isak's recovery and Liverpool's season over Sweden's World Cup ambitions.
