Ryan Reynolds Humorously Ejects Former Wrexham Striker During Live Broadcast
Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds delivered a playful but firm directive to former Wrexham favourite Ollie Palmer during a live Sky Sports alternative commentary session. The incident unfolded as Reynolds and co-owner Rob McElhenney provided coverage for Wrexham's Championship clash against Swansea City, which ended in a convincing 2-0 victory for the home side.
Deadpool Revelation Sparks Comic Outburst
The exchange occurred when Reynolds warmly recalled Palmer's cameo appearance in the 2024 blockbuster film Deadpool and Wolverine, which Reynolds both starred in and co-produced. "Ollie Palmer stole the show there in Deadpool and Wolverine," Reynolds remarked during the broadcast.
To everyone's surprise, Palmer responded with a confession: "I've got a confession to make, I've not seen it [Deadpool and Wolverine] yet." This admission prompted an immediate comic reaction from the film's leading man.
Reynolds swiftly retorted: "You know what, you can just put the microphone down, and you can head out of the exit, in fact, walk through the away section and leave." Palmer attempted to recover the situation by assuring Reynolds, "I am going to watch it, I will watch it, I promise."
Former Players Join Celebrity Commentary Team
The Sky Sports broadcast featured an unusual lineup with Reynolds and McElhenney being joined by two former Wrexham strikers. Ollie Palmer, who spent three-and-a-half years with the club before moving to Swindon Town late last summer, appeared alongside Steven Fletcher, who retired after two campaigns with Wrexham.
Both former players had become fan favourites during their time at the STōK Cae Ras, with Palmer's popularity earning him that memorable cameo in Reynolds' superhero film. The lighthearted banter between the Hollywood owner and his former player provided entertaining moments throughout the match coverage.
Wrexham Secures Important Championship Victory
While the commentary provided plenty of entertainment, the on-field action proved equally compelling for Wrexham supporters. The Dragons secured a 2-0 victory over Swansea City thanks to goals from expensive summer acquisitions Callum Doyle and Nathan Broadhead.
This important win extends Wrexham's advantage to six points over Derby County and Southampton, who currently occupy sixth position - the Championship's final play-off place. However, Southampton maintain a game in hand, which they will contest away against table-toppers Coventry City.
Reynolds Maintains Perspective on Promotion Hopes
Despite the team's strong position in the Championship standings, Reynolds demonstrated characteristic perspective when discussing promotion prospects. "You have to check yourself, too," he cautioned. "We're in the Championship; the mere fact that we're here is worth taking stock of."
The actor elaborated on his philosophy: "Do we want to win it all? Of course, we do, we're all competitors, but we have to take stock and see that this is part of the reward."
Reynolds also reflected on the broader community aspect of football, stating: "For me, my favourite thing about this experience is: I don't care what your ideologies are and where you are and your identity, there's such a feeling of togetherness. In every arena, a community gets to come together for something we share in common."
The Hollywood star expressed particular appreciation for the Welsh setting, adding: "I love looking around here, being in the fresh air, being outside in the wonderful country of Wales, and being on the pitch; I don't ever take that for granted."
Broadcast Package Promotion
During the broadcast, Sky Sports promoted their discounted Premier League and EFL package for the 2025/26 season. The Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle offers savings of £336 and provides access to more than 1,400 live matches across various competitions.
The package includes at least 215 live Premier League games each season, representing an increase of up to 100 matches, alongside coverage of Formula 1, darts, golf and other sporting events.
