Rory McIlroy's Back Issues Hamper Players Championship Defence
McIlroy Struggles with Back Problems at Players Championship

Rory McIlroy's defence of his Players Championship title at Sawgrass got off to a difficult start as the Masters champion struggled with ongoing back problems, posting a two-over par opening round that left him well off the pace.

Injury Concerns Loom Large

McIlroy had withdrawn from the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Saturday before his third round, citing back issues that have clearly continued to trouble him. Despite spending extra time recuperating at home and managing a short practice session at Ponte Vedra on Wednesday, the world number two never looked comfortable during his opening round.

A Frustrating Start

The Northern Irishman made successive bogeys at the fourth and fifth holes, with his tee shot at the fourth veering left into the treeline and his approach at the fifth finding a bunker. Although McIlroy immediately clawed a birdie back on the sixth after a brilliant second shot from the bunker, that gain was swiftly cancelled out after another wayward drive off the 11th tee left him in deep rough.

McIlroy did regroup to move through the closing holes level par, finishing with a neat chip and short putt, but will have plenty to think about overnight as he tries to manage both his game and his physical condition.

Leaders Emerge Amid Challenging Conditions

Four players shared the club-house lead at five under par, with Sepp Straka joining Maverick McNealy, Lee Hodges and Sahith Theegala at the top after chipping in for eagle at the 16th. Austin Smotherman, who started on the back nine, also sat at five under as he looked to claim the solo lead heading into his final three holes.

Justin Thomas, Russell Henley and Taylor Moore all posted solid rounds of four under, while England's Tommy Fleetwood finished in a group alongside Ryder Cup team-mates Ludvig Aberg and Viktor Hovland at three under. Fleetwood had been five under par after his first 11 holes but dropped three shots across the closing holes.

"Just a few sort of simple dropped shots. I think just the way the game is," said Fleetwood. "Other than that, I played solid."

Disappointments and Withdrawals

It was a round to forget for Ireland's Shane Lowry, who finished with an eight on the 18th after finding the water twice, signing for a disappointing 76. World number one Scottie Scheffler could only manage an even-par opening round, with his driver choice again under scrutiny.

"It just kept going right," Scheffler said. "(I) hit some better ones on the back (nine), but overall, I just (have) got to be a little sharper."

Play had earlier been suspended for approximately twenty minutes following heavy rain before resuming from 12.30pm local time, with afternoon tee times pushed back by half-an-hour. The conditions added another layer of challenge to an already demanding tournament.

Another Injury Blow

Collin Morikawa withdrew after just one hole, having been in obvious discomfort while taking a practice swing on the 11th tee box. The two-time major winner expressed frustration at the sudden onset of his back problem.

"I felt fine in warm-up," Morikawa said. "Nothing has been any signs of back problems. I teed it up on 11, took one practice swing, and I just knew it was gone. I can't swing through it. Trust me, I would play if I could. It is just the worst thing in the world."

With McIlroy's title defence already facing significant challenges and Morikawa's withdrawal adding to the tournament's injury concerns, the Players Championship has begun under a cloud of physical uncertainty for several top contenders.
