Kyren Wilson Horse Win Amid Chester Ladies Day Chaos

Kyren Wilson, the 2024 World Snooker Champion, experienced a mix of tension and triumph at Chester Racecourse on Ladies Day as his horse, Donegal Rose, claimed victory in the delayed British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes.

The race was postponed for over an hour after jockeys reported horses slipping during the opening five-furlong sprint, won by course specialist Roman Dragon. Remedial work, including cutting grass on the bends and applying sand, allowed the fixture to proceed.

Wilson's Emotional Win

Donegal Rose, the 9-4 favourite ridden by Oisin Murphy, surged late to win. Wilson, speaking on ITV Racing, said: "Brilliant. With what was going on before, it built the tension up. We weren't sure if the race was going to go ahead. Amazing, a really good experience."

Wilson is a part-owner of Donegal Rose, trained by Hugo Palmer at Michael Owen's Manor House Stables. His wife Sophie also has a share in Koodini, who finished ninth.

Track Concerns and Resolution

Following the first race, several jockeys reported slipping. Jason Watson pulled up Stratusnine, and the sprinter slipped with two furlongs left. Murphy praised groundstaff for their work, adding: "I just had to do what was right by the horse."

Clerk of the course Eloise Quayle confirmed 3mm of water was added after Wednesday's racing, and sand was applied. A delegation of jockeys, trainers, and officials walked the course before deciding racing could continue.

The BHA stewards' report stated: "An inspection was held... Having considered the evidence, the Stewards were satisfied that racing could continue after remedial work."

Wilson's New Hobby

Wilson, a ten-time ranking title winner, said he is learning from Owen: "Chatting to Michael, his knowledge on every horse is incredible. I'm still new to racing, so I'm picking his brains. It's great to have a hobby away from snooker."
