Tommy Fleetwood's Family Flee Dubai Amid Regional Conflict as Golfer Details 'Lucky' Escape
Golf star Tommy Fleetwood has spoken out about the immense relief he feels after his family managed to escape Dubai amidst escalating conflict in the Middle East. The professional golfer, who has resided in the United Arab Emirates since 2022 with his wife Clare, detailed the stressful ordeal while competing at the Players Championship in Florida.
Family Stranded as Conflict Escalates
Fleetwood's wife, son, and stepsons found themselves temporarily stranded in Dubai while the golfer was preparing for the prestigious Players Championship in the United States. The situation became increasingly concerning as the UK Foreign Office issued travel advisories against all but essential travel to the UAE on March 7, citing the country's involvement in regional conflicts involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
"Of course I'm reassured," the 35-year-old athlete stated after his opening round. "It is difficult not being able to travel. That has obviously been difficult. But when you know they're fine, that's kind of a relief."
'Lucky' Timing in Chaotic Circumstances
The escape was far from straightforward, with Fleetwood revealing that his family's initial flight was cancelled or suspended before they managed to secure passage on another aircraft. "They got lucky getting out because they got out on the flight and then I think something happened at the airport while they were in the air or something," Fleetwood explained, emphasizing the fortunate timing that allowed their departure.
His family finally landed safely in the United Kingdom on Wednesday, bringing an end to the tense period of uncertainty. "I think Clare is very relieved now," Fleetwood added. "She feels good and everything. It's just not a great time for so many people in the country. It's just unsettling for everyone, really."
Safety Concerns Amid Regional Turmoil
The golfer acknowledged the broader context of the situation, noting that many British citizens in Dubai have faced significant challenges including cancelled flights and unexpected expenses during the crisis. Footage has emerged showing drone attacks hitting high-rise buildings in the region, adding to the urgency for those seeking to leave.
Despite the concerning circumstances, Fleetwood expressed gratitude for the safety measures implemented locally. "All I can say is that my family felt very safe and think the nation and the leaders have done an amazing job of making everybody feel safe and well and protected," he stated. "I know my family have been safe and that's the important thing. But you would wish for different."
Professional Focus Amid Personal Concern
Remarkably, Fleetwood managed to maintain his professional composure on the golf course despite the personal worries about his family's safety. He shot an impressive three-under-par 69 during the opening round at Sawgrass, placing him just two shots behind the tournament leaders.
The lead is currently shared by five players including Ryder Cup star Sepp Straka, while defending champion Rory McIlroy struggled with a two-over-par performance, admitting to feeling "rusty" as he manages back injury concerns. Fleetwood's ability to perform under such personal pressure demonstrates remarkable mental fortitude, though he was quick to put things in perspective: "It's easy for me to say it's been on my mind but at the same time I'm not the one who was there."
