Police have launched a manhunt following a reported rape and assault of a woman in her 20s by a stranger near the Redheugh Bridge in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. The incident occurred between 1.20am and 2.10am on Saturday, in the area between the bridge access point and the junction with Askew Road.
Victim's Escape and Police Response
The woman managed to flee the scene and contacted police once she reached a safe location. Officers are now appealing for information and dashcam footage from anyone who was travelling in the area at the time.
Suspect Description
The attacker is described as a tall, white man in his 20s, with blonde hair and a local accent, wearing a black puffer jacket.
Detective Chief Inspector Chris Deavin, of Northumbria Police’s Safeguarding team, praised the victim’s bravery and assured the public that specialist support is being provided. He stated: 'As soon as we received the report, we began an investigation and have been carrying out extensive enquiries.'
Deavin added: 'While incidents of this nature are extremely rare in our area, we recognise the concern they can cause. The safety of the public is our utmost priority and we have been carrying out extra patrols in the area.' He encouraged anyone with concerns to speak to an officer.
