Police are investigating after a woman was raped by a stranger in the early hours of Saturday, May 2, near the Redheugh Bridge linking Gateshead and Newcastle. The attack occurred between 1.20am and 2.10am in an area between the Gateshead entry/exit point to the bridge and the junction with Askew Road.
The victim, who is in her 20s, managed to reach a safe place and contact police. Northumbria Police's Safeguarding team has launched an investigation, including a review of CCTV, and is offering specialist support to the woman.
Officers have released a description of the suspect: a tall white man in his 20s with blonde hair and a local accent, wearing a black puffer jacket. They are appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone who was travelling in the area at the time and may have dashcam footage.
Detective Chief Inspector Chris Deavin said: 'Firstly, I want to recognise the bravery of the victim. We are committed to bringing perpetrators of these types of crimes to justice.' He added that extra patrols are being carried out in the area.
